Peace of Mind for Parents Who Work at Rush
Nestled just west of Rush’s main campus is a little jewel that has brought peace of mind to a countless number of Rush staff members. The Laurance Armour Day School (LADS) is an innovative early childhood education program that has provided the children of Rush employees and members of the surrounding West Side community with outstanding preschool education and before and after-school care for 40 years.
“One major effect of LADS is the sense of community it creates among the families and children, that sense of community transfers over to Rush. It’s had a very positive effect on the workplace for our employees,” says Jane Grady, assistant vice president of human resources, who was director of LADS from 1970 to 1995. The mother of two sons who attended LADS, Grady undoubtedly speaks for many parents when she says, “I don’t know how I could have kept working without LADS. I always felt my kids were safe and happy and had a good time.”
Employer-run child care programs are extremely rare, let alone an employer-operate pre-school like LADS. The school is one of only 18 licensed childcare centers in Illinois that are operated by an employers in order to serve employee’s children, according to data from the Illinois Network of Child Care Resources and Referral Agencies.
LADS will celebrate its 40th anniversary as a part of Rush with several events including a party on Saturday, September 18th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a LADS parade through the Rush campus on Monday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. Students will dress in 1970s style costumes to commemorate 1970, the year the Bishop Anderson Foundation transferred the school’s ownership and operation to Rush.
