Colleges to tack on 5.1% for residence and 5.7% for meals, but Ole Miss fares better

Students at Mississippi colleges and universities will pay more for housing and food under recently approved increases by the state College Board, but the bite will be less severe for University of Mississippi students than for many others.

The board last week in Jackson gave initial approval to an average increase of 5.1 percent in campus housing costs and 5.7 percent in meal plans.

Last Thursday’s action comes on the heels of a tuition increase at all eight public universities. On average, students in the fall will be paying about 6.8 percent more in tuition because of multiyear increases the board approved last year.

Ole Miss is the closest of the state’s major universities to DeSoto County and northwest Mississippi. Ole Miss shares a satellite campus with Northwest Mississippi Community College at DeSoto Center in Southaven.

At Ole Miss, the cost of on-campus housing will rise 3.03 percent, according to spokesman Mary Stanton.

“Housing costs vary depending on which dorm or residence hall a student selects,” Stanton said by e-mail. “The range in cost increase is from 2.7 percent to 5.1 percent.”

The university did not address how much the increase would be in food expenses, but the Ole Miss website estimates those expenses at $3,258 for the 2010-11 academic year.

The food estimate is part of a total of $19,210 in total estimated tuition and expenses for the academic year for in-state students. Those paying out-of-state tuition pay an estimated total of $27,664.

A spokesman for Ole Miss’ DeSoto Center campus said Monday that students there are not affected by the planned increases because the campus does not offer housing or meal plans.

Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds has urged leaders to come up with multiyear plans for housing like they did for tuition. He says advance planning gives families a better idea of what costs will be.

However, Bounds said the system was not ready to move forward right now with multiyear proposals on housing.

The biggest hikes for the fall semester in housing and food are coming at Mississippi Valley State University, where students can expect to pay an average 17 percent more for housing and 14.4 percent more for meals.

Students at Mississippi State University will pay the most to live on campus — an average of about $4,680 a year, or 3.3 percent more than they are paying this year.

Speaking Your Readers’ Language

Yesterday a woman who lives in India, whom I will call Bala, participated in my online class How to Write Email That Gets Results. She told me that at her company a typical opening sentence of an email is this: ”I hope this email finds you well.” Bala wanted to know whether such an opening sentence was appropriate when sending email to US clients.

What do you think? Is “I hope this email finds you well” an effective way to begin a business email?

In its favor, the sentence is courteous. But it doesn’t speak the language of a US or Canadian audience, in my experience.

Rather than opening with a sentence about finding you well, business writers in the US and Canada are much more likely to dive into the subject of the email after greeting the reader by name with a “Hi,” “Hello,” or sometimes “Dear.”

If the writer and reader have not communicated lately, a sentence such as “I hope you are doing well” or “I hope you are enjoying this spring weather” is the US and Canadian equivalent of Bala’s example. (I have emails with those opening sentences in my inbox.)

But “I hope you” sentences are not normally used in email to strangers. Those messages are likely to begin with ”Dear” and the person’s name, followed by a sentence about the reason for the email.

Bala is wise to want to use her readers’ language and style. Doing so will create comfort and build trust with people across many thousands of miles.

I would like to create comfort too. For my blog readers around the world, I would like to write a post about how to communicate sympathy and caring to Japanese friends and business associates, in light of the suffering and anxiety caused by the earthquake and tsunami. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough experience with Japanese culture to know whether such messages are appropriate and if they are, which words would best express heartfelt sentiments in the face of such tragedy.

If you are or know an expert in Japanese culture, would you send me an email and share your advice? My address is gATsyntaxtraining.com.

I hope to do my best to speak my readers’ language. I will appreciate your help.

How to Increase Trust in Email

I was straightening my office and found an article I had printed off the Internet, “Karen Stephenson’s Quantum Theory of Trust,” written by Art Kleiner and published in 2002 by strategy+business. It is a fascinating article about relationships in business–not hierarchical relationships, but the work, social, and networking relationships that affect a company’s success.

The article touched on business writing, specifically email, on the last page:

“One easy way to improve the level of trust, anytime and anywhere, is simply to increase the speed with which people respond to communication. When people return our calls or e-mails quickly, it sends a signal that we can rely on them because our connection, however distant, is important enough to claim some of their attention. ‘Human beings always keep an internal accounting system of who owes what to whom,’ says Steve Haeckel, director of strategic studies at IBM’s Advanced Business Institute, who has collaborated with Professor Stephenson for 10 years on some of the trust-related research she’s done. ‘Response time is one indicator of the degree of trustworthiness of the other individual.’”

When I finished reading the article last night around 10 o’clock, I pulled out my laptop and responded to a few emails I had hoped to get to earlier in the week. I want people to trust me. If fast responses build trust, I am going to work on responding faster, even if only with a short message telling the individual when I will respond in detail.

Could you increase trust with customers, coworkers, and people who report to you by responding promptly to their email? Does response time affect your trust in others?

Ping Pong, Air Hockey and a Hot Tub

Whitney is a Master of Science in Accountancy candidate, and one of our newest guest bloggers. I find that the most interesting guest posts come from this program, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. If youre a new reader, you may want to see what Lisle had to say about the program and what King Street has to offer. Then, learn more about Whitneys experience in the program below.

Already half way through my second semester as a MSA (Master of Science in Accountancy) student, I am already getting sad that these days will soon be over.  Moving to a new city (from Raleigh), not knowing a single soul, and beginning this new chapter of my life has made me so much more independent.  I just can’t believe it has flown by SO fast!!

Although I am working in PWC-Atlanta’s tax practice after graduation, the flexibility of the program allows us to branch out and take whichever classes we want. This is why I chose to expand my knowledge of auditing this semester. Taking a couple classes related to audit has only confirmed my choice of tax!

Although school has been ruling the majority of my life, I have been able to enjoy so much of the city of Charleston. I am from Cary, NC and went to NC State for my undergrad, which is very (maybe “a bit too”) close to my home. Moving four hours away from my family and friends has been quite the change, but only in the best sense of the word. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend a year of their life learning and living in one of the greatest places in the country? Being able to walk outside of my downtown apartment and see a horse and carriage and tons of people walking around literally always puts a smile on my face. It is also a plus to live so close to the beach – getting a tan in February is not a bad way to live.

My experience here in Charleston and in the graduate program would not be the same without the amazing people I have met. Our program consists of under 30 students, which makes us one big (dysfunctional) family. We have had several social events ranging from happy hours to oyster roasts to weekend getaways. Our most recent getaway was over this past Christmas break. About eight of us took a road trip to Asheville, NC to celebrate a successful first semester. Being snowed-in a cabin on top of a mountain, we learned more about each other than I think we ever wanted to know. Nevertheless, board games, ping pong, air hockey, and a nice big hot tub kept us occupied and we all had such a great time. However, after getting our car stuck in the snow while on a curvy mountain road and almost falling off the side of the mountain, I think we were all ready to get back to Charleston!

I’m looking forward to enjoying the next few months here in Charleston and finishing up my education in June! Then it is off to Atlanta for me to begin my career! As excited as I am about starting a new career, I will be so sad to leave this amazing town, wonderful program at the College, and great friends.
